Well this gig has come and gone…great little night this one! In fact it was a most enjoyable weekend all round.

Flevans got in Friday afternoon, we got a few beers in, a bit of food and headed down to the venue.

Noel played some cracking tunes for us after Beckett did some warming up and some sound engineering to get the monitors working, and the man Flevans killed it at the end with a booty shaking selection of funk, soul and beats.

As is the usual story, Richie and Kev and his lovely assistant did a smashing job with live visuals.

The aftermath resulted in a glorious score of food from a late night eatery on the Ormeau Road, and a beer round in Andy’s.

Big hooray for Flevans in general.

Massive F*ck You to Ryanair, who are thieves. Boycott ‘em.

Gloriously catchy songs, infectious hooks and dancefloor-delighting beats from the multi-talented instrumentalist, composer, producer and sometime vocalist.

Flevans began making music in his home town of Brighton using a 4 track cassette recorder on which he’d spend hours looping breaks and hooks to create tracks. It was on the back of a demo created solely using this and a 10 second sampler that Tru Thoughts initially snapped him up, recognizing his innate knack for crafting irresistibly infectious hooks, and commissioning a number of EPs and an album. After a string of sold out 12″ singles, Tru Thoughts released the highly successful ‘Make New Friends’ album in 2004. Combining disco and funk with cut and paste sampling sensibilities and infectious basslines, the album – a collection of Flevans’ EP singles – was instantly likeable and irresistibly danceable. It proved very popular on the so called ‘electric-soul’ scene, with the piano tinged, disco infused “The Notion” scoring a place in the Unabombers’ highly respected Electric Souls Vol. 3 compilation.

Over the years Mark has been involved in a humbling array of acts such as Global Communication, Jedi Knights and Harmonic 33 as well as going under the alias of Troubleman, Link and Reload.

Whilst adding a “1″ to alias HARMONIC 33, Mark presents new music exploring the relationship between old and new – pulling influences from US hip-hop a la Jay Dee, detroit techno, Kraftwerk, dubstep and grime. The result is an EP which is rich and warm, resonating the vibrant Detroit sound. Of course.. 313 is the Telephone Area Code for Detroit.

We got positioned in a wicked spot in between the halfpipe and one of the ramps, so we could check out all the action while we were dropping some tunes.

Andy ended up assisting Connie with a character on her piece (it’s the big mad fuzz ball).

Big up to everyone we met down there, including Liam, top man, check their site here, http://www.ourbus.org/ they do some great work!

Nice! We went into the lower depths on this one, a bad-ass selection of gear from Chuck, SomeoneElse and Beckett, diving into the realms of deep house, dub techno, dubstep and broken beats. Flows better than the supply of gas from russia to eastern europe, and dives deeper than Captain Nemo, 2 solid hours of delicious beats.

Wow. What a gig this one was...Martyn is one of the best producers out there, and we were lucky to get him along for a mix!

At the height of what we like to call the summer over here, we got one of electronic musics finest producers over for a session. What a session it was. Live visuals from kev largey, blazing beats from the rudimentary crew, and an astounding set from Martyn.

It may not have been too warm on the streets, but the front page was on fire!

Hopefully we will see Martyn back this way again soon.

Martyn is:

Dutch-born producer and DJ that first made his mark on the drum ‘n bass scene in 2005 with releases on dj Flight’s Play:Musik imprint as well as Marcus Intalex’ Revolve:r – showing his detroit/chicago schooling and translating it into the realm of 170 bpm. After a few 12″es he took the dnb as well as the dubstep world by surprise with “Broken / Shadowcasting” – a deep dubstep 12″ that gained attention from top dj’s as kode9, gilles peterson, mr scruff, pole and laurent garnier. After Tempa signed “Everything About You” for their Tempa Allstars series, Martyn continued to produce tracks combining detroit elements with early 2step rhythms, resulting in the launch of his own label 3024 in 2007, and much sought after remixes such as his take on TRG’s “Broken Heart” on UK dubstep label Hessle Audio.

Boomkat on his most recent release:
Martyn – All i have is memories / Suburbia (apple pips)

Martyn taps into that dubstep/breakbeat/techno axis that’s pushing all the right buttons for us at the moment. A-Side “All I Have Is Memories” is a killer sunshine steppa, employing classic staggered progressions and shimmering keys with a rubbed-out low-end that provides a hefty counterbalance . The real treat is tucked away on the flip, however, “Suburbia” deploying fuzzed out dub chords and 2562-style squashed breaks that employ heaving sounds within a hugely spacious arrangement. The palette and stylistic shifts are borrowed from Jungle, Techno, Garage – pioneering new movements in the continuum with an attention to detail that beggars belief. As far as we’re concerned – it just doesn’t get any better. Track of the year anyone?

Different buzz on this on. Sunday night musical musings with a "live" set from Ed Devane, rough beats from Redmonk, real nice live Dub-Techno from Burnt Fingers' King Concrete, and some chilled sounds from Beckett.

Deep down in the basement of McHughes pub, over by the old albert clock in Belfast, we bust out some alternative vibes for this Sunday night weekend round off.

Beckett kicked off with some lovely lush chilled beats, and sunblest reggae, King Concrete stepped up to follow with some live Dub Techno. Following on, as the Guinness kept going down nicely, was Redmonk with his usual explosive beats, with Ed Devane rounding the night off with an “interesting” live show.

Stay tuned, hopefully for more of the same down there in the future. Great little venue, perfect for post weekend, pre return to work get togethers.
