Big time. The excellent PercussionLab.com have featured Roughquest as their mix of the week this week.

Rudimentary fans will already know Roughquest from his excellent Play EP (http://boomkat.com/downloads/316901-roughquest-play), and we’re sure you already know about PercussionLab, run by Praveen, one half of Sepalcure, who’s recent release on hotflush, Love Pressure, we love to bits (http://boomkat.com/downloads/319981-sepalcure-love-pressure). We’ve discovered some amazing mixes and artists via Percussionlab, so it’s a real honour to see one of our artists featured!

Here’s what they say about the mix

“This week’s featured set is by up and coming Rudimentary Records producer Roughquest. His “Beats & Treats” mix revolves around dirty fat beats that have inspired him throughout his career. Mashups galore featuring samples from Cannibal Ox, Souls of Mischief, Jaylib, Company Flow and Beck… Don’t sleep and be sure to check his recently released EP on Rudimentary Records! Classic Doc. Oc’ on this one. Its been a while.”

Anyway, make tracks over there and get this mix into your life.

The richly sensual atmospheres of ‘Alone In The Jungle’ switches again to a smartly broken minimal style akin to Breakage and ‘Lazy Sunday’ mixes bluest chord with brushed jazz percussion and a very tidy blend of organic and synthetic textures. Very Highly Recommended.

We are very pleased to announce Rudimentary Records first release!!

“A Different Animal” by Yoru, is a 4 track digital EP and whilst it’s electronic music that has it’s roots in a couple of different genres, it seems to be slightly at odds with its original phylum, a bit of a mutation of the original form.

Flowing from the switchy Dubstepish Flip Flop, to the dub techno of Stories, across the deep submersed drum and bass sounds of “Breath out…” to the uplifting reminiscence of “Happy Ghost” the EP moves and weaves through moods and styles with a deft musicality, and a blend of sounds and styles that we just love here at Rudimentary HQ. We hope you do too….

Emerging from the unknown in 2009 with is self-titled Album – Clubroot, with a sound oozing a uniquely tailored depth & atmosphere. This sound coming out of St Albans, Hertfordshire via Portland, Oregon was his debut release on the bass obsessed LoDubs imprint.

University paid dividends for a young producer with a love for the electronic splattering of D n B, Uk Garage, House and Techno. At university he was happily exposed to Mary Anne Hobbs’ Dubstep Warz Show in 2006 and the likes of Skream, Vex’d and Loefah before his taste progressed to a deeper moodier side of the dubstep spectrum. His sound now perhaps reflex some of the tones inspired by the likes of Burial and Distance.

His final year project entitled ‘Embryo’ gathered interest and Clubroot found himself with a album release. Critics ears were pricked by this debut and radiant reviews were thrown his way, deservedly solidifying an excellent release.

His 2nd Album due for release around May, followed by an E.P, as well as plenty of collaborations in the pipe line, Clubroot is sure to create a big impact this year. You can grab a pre-order here on Boomkat, but for now here is 30min serving to give you a taste of his future sound.

ARTIST: A GUY CALLED GERALD

TITLE: TRONIC JAZZ THE BERLIN SESSIONS
LABEL: LABORATORY INSTINCT

Words: Niall Coughlan

Someone who’s been around long enough to have a genuine claim as one of the originators of UK dance music, Gerald Simpsons latest album shows the new school how it’s done. Techy and acidic from the outset Simpsons current base of Berlin shows its influence as much as the legacies of Detroit, Chicago and Manchester. All of which mash together with masterfully complex rhythms playing off bleepy stabs, analogue synths and growling basslines to create a timeless yet futuristic album no self-respecting house or techno head should be without. There’s even a cheeky nod to his involvement with 808 State on ‘Pacific Samba’ before the swung-out loopiness of ‘Merfed’ closes the album with a hint of flavours yet to come.
5/5

Sound engineer and educator, recent Master of Sonic Arts and currently working towards his PhD, examining the potential of biosignals as a performance tool, Niall Coughlan aka 2BiT gives us his tips for tunes in-coming.

RUDI ZYGADLO:
RESEALABLE FRIENDSHIP
CAT: ZIQ264
LABEL: PLANET MU
RELEASED: 29TH MARCH
FORMAT: 12″/ DIGITAL

An unholy union of dubstep attitude and pop hooks, these are some of the freshest sounding tracks to come my way in quite a while! Won’t appeal to everyone but much kudos is due for daring to take the ‘formula’ in a new direction. Remix duties are handled by the mighty Starkey who turns in a bleepy mix with a dose of wonk and Slugabed does his best to drown the original in surging bass and drum choppage. The EP is rounded off with the downright weird staggering ‘Udo and the Clave’. His sound referencing everything from Joker to Zappa this EP promises well for Rudi’s upcoming album ‘Great Western Laymen’. One to watch…

Artist: Kyle Hall
Name: Kaychunk / You Know What I Feel
Format: 12” vinyl / mp3
Label: HYPERDUB [HDB032]
Release Date: 15/03/2010

On opener ‘Kaychunk’ syncopated drums bump and sway under lush detroit strings and synths joining the dots between Detroit techno and LA’s hiphop soul sound. On the flip the woozy vibe continues with a shuffling yet driving drum pattern underpinning drifting chords. Ultimately despite their strengths both tracks begin and end without ever really going anywhere, though the journey is nice enough.
