A bit of a history of Rudimentary...

Rudimentary started off many a year back, more or less around the time we did this our first Dub and Grub night.

Actually, probably a bit before that when Rory (Yoru/Beckett) and Andy (SomeoneElse) started knocking together a few mixes and such…we didn’t start off as a label, but the plan was always rumbling along in the background. Anyway, the Dub and Grub thing was some serious craic, with our old buddy Chuck of Homespun fame getting in on the action (guy is an unreal DJ, check his mixes on our soundcloud).

After the first gig, another followed, with Redmonk from dublin’s Kaboogie! joing us for some antics, which resulted in more good times, and basically our aim to play deadly music continued. With the gigs rolling with some amazing guests over the years, like Martyn, Daedelus, Shackleton, Bass Clef, Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313), Scuba, Sigha, Mickey from NakedLunch and various others. We still do gigs, our new adventures are called “The Explorers Club” a bit of a hit and run style dance, matching whoever we can with wherever we can.

With the nights ticking over we also decided to start a label…our first release by Yoru, basically to further our aim of getting deadly music out amongst the world, which we hope we have done with further release from Roughquest, Fono One and Future Cruiser, with plenty more lined up!

Oh yeah, as well as this, we also did a radio show for a time on the now sadly defunct Feile FM, and will be continuing the tradition with some podcast action.

We also have some plans for some magazine stuff, but thats a whole other story…

Just a quick bit of background on the pair of us, Rory has been DJ’ing since 1996 or thereabouts, mostly as Beckett and now as Yoru, co-founded irishdrumandbass.com, and has been making music for a while now too.

Andy is a Graphic designer by trade, and has been DJ’ing for a fair number of years too, he does all the artwork, posters, flyers etc. you can catch his work on Calibre’s recent Vinyl and CD releases actually…

Want to know more about the man behind our second release? Read on...

Roughquest’s Debut release “Play”, is a delightfully dark and dubby spin through eclectic soundscape elements meshed together in perfect harmony with heaving lows and assured and flowing broken beats. It really is a fantastic EP.

Roughquest has been experimenting with beats and sounds since the early days of Octamed on the Amiga 500.

Ever since he used to listen to his older brother’s old rave tapes, the quest (albeit a rough one) for the perfect sub bass line has always been a prominent driving force in his music. He loves to use conventional sounds and tempos from dance music and contort them with organic textures and unusual found sounds to create something a little different for the ears.

His debut release has been well received across the board, some words from boomkat:

“Low key, deeper broken beat/garage soul debut from Roughquest. fans of Spacek’s smokier broken moments may well enjoy ‘Symmetry’, but ‘Dirty Liquid’ flips to

a darker technofied ‘step reminding of Kontext. The richly sensual atmospheres of ‘Alone In The Jungle’ switches again to a smartly broken minimal style akin to Breakage and ‘Lazy Sunday’ mixes bluest chord with brushed jazz percussion and a very tidy blend of organic and synthetic textures. Very Highly Recommended.”

Fono One, an absolute gentleman and a bad man producer.

Fono One hails from the North coast, however, is current creative stream flow out of Co. Donegal. His debut release with Rudimentary is a cracking, deep bass weight meditation which mirrors his uncompromising dj/live sets.

“Limber dub-tech styles from Fono One, dipping into a stride of Duffstep-alike techy rollers. ‘Arc Tek’ fixes filtered disco synths around flighty 2-step rhythms while ‘Meditation Dub’ keeps a nice tension between breakstepping syncopation and halfstepped dub. Yoru also offers a craftier rolling mix of ‘Meditation Dub’

with sophisticated deep end arrangements.”
